EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts the momentous Trial of the Marriage of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII, which took place in the Royal Palace of Blackfriars in London in 1528. The trial marked the end of Henry's first marriage and paved the way for his union with Anne Boleyn. Catherine, the Spanish princess and the first wife of Henry VIII, had been married to the king for over 20 years and had produced one daughter, Mary Tudor, who would later become Queen of England. However, Catherine's failure to produce a male heir led Henry to seek an annulment of the marriage, citing Leviticus 20:21, which forbade marriage between brother and sister-in-law. The trial was presided over by a panel of ecclesiastical judges, who heard testimony from various witnesses, including Catherine herself. Despite her impassioned pleas and the support of her allies, including her nephew, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the judges ruled in favor of Henry. The annulment was granted, and Catherine was stripped of her titles and possessions. The trial was a turning point in English history, as it marked the beginning of Henry's reign as a supreme head of the Church of England and the start of his series of marriages. The image captures the drama and tension of the trial, with Catherine, dressed in black and looking resolute, facing off against Henry and his advisors, who are depicted in rich robes and regal attire. The print offers a glimpse into the complex political and religious landscape of Tudor England and the intrigue that surrounded the royal court.
