Turkish Wrestler (4 of 4)

A Turkish wrestler, Ryza Bey, watches his assistant practising an acrobatic trick handstand on a chair surrounded by dumbells. A series of cards (4 of 4) depicting a Turkish wrestler, juggler, weightlifter, strongman and entertainer. Yagli gures (Turkish wrestling) is the Turkish national sport. It is commonly known as oil wrestling (sometimes as grease wrestling) because the wrestlers douse themselves with olive oil. It is related to Uzbek Kurash, Tuvan Khuresh and to Tatar Koras. The wrestlers, known as pehlivan (from Persian meaning " hero" or " champion" ) wear a type of hand-stitched lederhosen called kisbet (sometimes kispet), which were traditionally made of water buffalo hide, but now also of calf leather

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the intense focus and dedication of Turkish wrestler Ryza Bey as he watches his assistant attempt an acrobatic handstand on a chair surrounded by dumbbells. The scene is reminiscent of the rich history and tradition of Yagli Gures, or Turkish wrestling, which dates back to ancient civilizations and is considered the Turkish national sport. The wrestler, dressed in the traditional kisbet outfit, a type of hand-stitched lederhosen made of water buffalo hide or calf leather, exudes a sense of strength and power. The use of olive oil in the wrestling matches, giving the wrestlers a glossy, slippery appearance, is a testament to the sport's ancient origins and its connection to Uzbek Kurash, Tuvan Khuresh, and Tatar Koras. The series of cards in the background depict various aspects of Turkish culture, including a juggler, weightlifter, strongman, and entertainer, highlighting the versatility and richness of Turkish arts and traditions. The moustachioed Ryza Bey, with his intense gaze and serious expression, embodies the spirit of the Turkish pehlivan, or hero and champion. This photograph, taken in 1905, offers a glimpse into the past and the historical significance of Turkish wrestling, which continues to be an entertaining and popular spectacle in Turkey and beyond.
