One of Durhams oldest pubs looks out of place, in a street dating back to medieval
One of Durhams oldest pubs looks out of place, in a street dating back to medieval times. The Buffalo Head was bulldozed to allow student accommodation to be built behind it. The old building went, but the planners insisted it should rise again on the same site, Saddler Street, with the same bricks and stone and looking just as it did before. Now the facade is back, and it has led to complains from Durham conservation watchdogs, the City of Durham Trust. Their secretary said they have protested to the council that the second floor windows look completely out of place. " They don t look right, and we are certain they weren t there before. But like lots of people we just can t remember the exact details before the demolition people moved in". Durham, August 1976

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intriguing juxtaposition of old and new in Durham's historic streets. Standing proudly amidst a backdrop dating back to medieval times, one of Durham's oldest pubs, The Buffalo Head, appears slightly out of place. In 1976, this beloved establishment was bulldozed to make way for student accommodation behind it. However, the city planners insisted on its resurrection on the same site along Saddler Street, meticulously reconstructing it with original bricks and stone to maintain its former glory. While many celebrated the return of this cherished facade, not everyone shared the same sentiment. The City of Durham Trust, acting as vigilant conservation watchdogs for the city's heritage, voiced their concerns about certain alterations made during reconstruction. Specifically pointing out that the second-floor windows seemed unfamiliar and incongruous within their historical context. Despite these objections from preservationists like the trust secretary who protested to the council regarding these changes, memories proved elusive when trying to recall precise details before demolition took place. Nevertheless, this photograph immortalizes a significant moment in time when Durham grappled with balancing progress and preservation in its ever-evolving landscape. As we gaze upon this snapshot from August 1976 captured by NCJ Archive's Memory Lane Prints collection, we are reminded of both our duty to honor history and our responsibility towards progress – a delicate dance that cities across centuries have had to navigate.
