EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph from the Motorsport Images archive, we find ourselves transported back to the historic 1966 Spa 1000 km race at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. The image captures the intense focus and determination of American drivers Peter Revson and Skip Scott as they prepare to tackle the demanding 14.1-kilometer track in their Essex Wire Corporation-sponsored Ford GT40. The Ford GT40, a legendary race car that would go on to dominate endurance racing in the late 1960s, sits proudly in the foreground. Revson, wearing his helmet and goggles, adjusts the final settings on the dashboard while Scott, clad in his racing overalls, checks the tire pressure. The tension in their faces is palpable as they both know that every second counts in this grueling endurance race. The Spa 1000 km was the second round of the 1966 International Championship for Makes and attracted some of the best drivers and teams from around the world. The race, which took place on May 22, 1966, was a true test of man and machine, with drivers facing not only each other but also the challenging conditions of the Belgian circuit. As the sun begins to set over the rolling hills of the Ardennes Forest, Revson and Scott climb into their Ford GT40, ready to embark on the battle that lies ahead. The roar of the engine as they accelerate away from the pit lane would be a sound that would echo through the annals of motorsport history, a testament to their courage and the indomitable spirit of competition.
