EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1920s, showcasing a remarkable LNER poster promoting rail travel to the enchanting city of York. The poster, designed by the talented artist Fred Taylor, transports us into a street scene illustration that captures the essence of this ancient walled city. The focal point of the image is undoubtedly The Shambles shopping area, with its picturesque old buildings exuding charm and history. As we gaze upon this bustling street, our eyes are drawn towards York Minster majestically standing in the background. Its towering presence adds an air of grandeur and spirituality to the scene. Intriguingly, amidst all this architectural beauty, we catch glimpses of everyday life unfolding before our eyes. Shoppers meander through the streets while a horse-drawn cart passes by in front. These small details bring vitality and authenticity to Taylor's artwork. Fred Taylor's artistic prowess extends beyond railway posters; his talent has graced prestigious venues such as Lloyds Underwriting Room and Reeds Lacquer Room. His work has been exhibited at esteemed galleries like the Royal Academy while also being commissioned for various transportation companies including London Transport and shipping companies. As we admire this stunning print from National Railway Museum, it serves as a reminder not only of York's historical significance but also of Fred Taylor's immense contribution to British art during his illustrious career.
