Framed Photos from National Railway Museum

Dublin and Holyhead, 1905

Original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson for a London & North Western Railway poster, showing a passenger ferry at sunset. Many British railway companies also operated ferry services. Wilkinson was commissioned by several of the companies to produce artwork for use in posters promoting their services. The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) began operating ferries between Holyhead and Dublin in 1860, and continued to run passenger services across the Irish Sea until it became part of the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) in 1923

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1905, capturing a moment of tranquility and beauty as depicted by Norman Wilkinson's original oil painting. The artwork was commissioned by the London & North Western Railway (LNWR) to promote their ferry services between Holyhead and Dublin. As we gaze at this mesmerizing scene, our eyes are drawn to a passenger ferry gracefully gliding across the shimmering sea at sunset. The warm hues of orange and pink paint the sky, casting a soft glow over the water's surface. It is a moment frozen in time, where nature's splendor meets human ingenuity. The LNWR was not alone in operating such ferry services; many British railway companies also ventured into this maritime domain. However, it was the LNWR that pioneered these crossings in 1860 and continued until its merger with the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) in 1923. In this image, Wilkinson skillfully captures both the grandeur of nature and the significance of transportation during that era. His attention to detail brings life to every brushstroke – from meticulously depicting each wave on the sea's surface to showcasing intricate details on both ferries and steamships. Through this print from National Railway Museum's collection, we are transported back in time to witness an important chapter in British railway history - one where land seamlessly connected with sea through these vital ferry services operated by pioneering companies like LNWR.
