Tregurtha Downs Mine, St Hilary, Cornwall. 1890
The horses were the main subject of this photograph, but in fact this provides us with an excellent view of part of this mine in the late nineteenth century. From left to right can be seen the count house, mill, stack shaft headgear and engine shaft. The latter is dominated by the house of the 80in pumping engine and associated boiler house and stack. Tregurtha Downs mine or Hampton mine, the set includes Wheal Rodney and Owen Vean Mine and probably also The Gears. The mine closed in 1897. Part of the A.K. Hamilton Jenkin collection. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1890 showcases the historic Tregurtha Downs Mine in St Hilary, Cornwall. While the horses take center stage in this image, they inadvertently offer us a remarkable glimpse into the late nineteenth-century mining scene. As we explore this snapshot from left to right, our eyes are drawn to various elements of the mine's infrastructure. Firstly, we encounter the count house, serving as an administrative hub for overseeing operations and managing accounts. Adjacent to it stands the mill, where ore was processed and refined before being transported for further use. Further along is the stack shaft headgear—a towering structure that facilitated access to underground tunnels. However, it is undoubtedly the engine shaft that commands attention with its imposing presence. Dominated by a grand house housing an impressive 80-inch pumping engine and accompanied by a boiler house and stack nearby; this area symbolizes both power and progress within Tregurtha Downs Mine. It's important to note that Tregurtha Downs mine formed part of a larger complex known as Hampton mine which encompassed Wheal Rodney and Owen Vean Mine alongside possibly The Gears. Unfortunately, despite its significance in shaping Cornwall's mining heritage, this once-thriving site ceased operations in 1897. Preserved within Royal Cornwall Museum's A. K. Hamilton Jenkin collection, this photograph offers us not only a window into history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity during an era defined by industrial advancement.
