EDITORS COMMENTS
Transporting us back in time to the bustling East Looe Quay of 1904, this print captures the essence of Cornwall's rich maritime history. Two majestic schooners, the Mary of Glasgow and Priscilla, gracefully rest along the quay, their sails neatly folded as they await their next voyage. The scene is alive with activity; local boys donning caps and sturdy clothing can be seen scurrying about, diligently carrying buckets and baskets filled with goods destined for these magnificent vessels. Intriguingly, on the right side of the frame stands a line of railway trucks brimming with coal from the renowned Liskeard and Looe Railway. This juxtaposition between traditional sailing ships and modern rail transport offers a glimpse into an era where multiple modes of transportation coexisted harmoniously. The skilled eye behind this remarkable photograph belongs to none other than Herbert Hughes, whose talent for capturing candid moments in time has made him a revered figure among Cornish photographers. Through his lens, we are transported not only to a specific place but also to an atmosphere that resonates with nostalgia. This extraordinary print serves as a testament to Cornwall's enduring seafaring heritage - its rugged coastline forever intertwined with tales of adventure upon vast oceans. It evokes emotions of wonderment at past journeys undertaken by these grand vessels while reminding us that even today, echoes of this vibrant maritime culture continue to shape Cornwall's identity.
