Imperial Service Medal presentation to Bruce Netherton at Restormel Castle, Lanlivery Parish, Cornwall. June 1989

Bruce Netherton, centre, accompanied by his wife Florence, receives the Imperial Service Medal from Beric Morley, Regional Director English Heritage. Mr Netherton worked for 40 years at Restormel Castle, 30 of them in charge as custodian, and had already the Queens Jubilee Medal. Bruce, who retired in 1986, remembers welcoming many visitors to the castle including Queen Elizabeth (later known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother) in 1950 when the entrance gates had to be taken down to allow her Rolls Royce to enter the grounds. In this photo print, we are transported back to the historic moment of June 1989 at Restormel Castle in Lanlivery Parish, Cornwall. The focus is on Bruce Netherton, a dedicated individual who devoted an impressive four decades of his life to the castle's service. Standing proudly at the center of attention, Bruce is accompanied by his loving wife Florence as he receives the prestigious Imperial Service Medal from Beric Morley, Regional Director of English Heritage. Bruce's remarkable journey began when he first set foot in Restormel Castle and embarked on a lifelong commitment as its custodian. For thirty years, he held the esteemed position overseeing every aspect of this magnificent Norman castle. His unwavering dedication and passion for preserving history earned him not only this distinguished medal but also the Queen's Jubilee Medal.
