Millstone, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. July 1987

Cornwall Council employees, on clearing a gully in Tanhouse Road, unearthed a 5 feet diameter millstone. The clearing of the gully will hopefully prevent further flooding to Queen Street at the bottom of Tanhouse Road. The three workmen, from left to right are Dennis Martin, Paul Crago and Martin Wherry. The millstone was later erected in the garden of the Mill Garden flats, which stands on the site of a mill. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from July 1987, we are transported to the picturesque town of Lostwithiel in Cornwall. The image showcases three dedicated Cornwall Council employees, Dennis Martin, Paul Crago, and Martin Wherry, as they diligently clear a gully in Tanhouse Road. Little did they know that their routine task would lead to an extraordinary discovery. As the trio worked tirelessly with their trusty tractor and digger, they unearthed a remarkable treasure - a magnificent millstone measuring an impressive five feet in diameter. This unexpected find held great significance for the community as it was hoped that clearing the gully would prevent further flooding to Queen Street at the bottom of Tanhouse Road. Following its unearthing, this historic millstone found its new home in the garden of Mill Garden flats which now stands on the site of a former mill. Its presence serves as a reminder of Lostwithiel's rich industrial heritage and pays homage to those who have labored before us. The skilled photographer Jonathan Barker expertly captures this momentous occasion with his lens. Through his artistry, he immortalizes not only the hard work and dedication displayed by these council workers but also highlights Cornwall's unique charm and beauty. This stunning photograph is more than just an image; it tells a story of resilience, community spirit, and preservation of history – all encapsulated within one frame.
