EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the early 1900s, we are transported back in time to the picturesque foreshore of Malpas, Cornwall. The image captures a serene moment as two men patiently await the arrival of the Malpas ferry on the tranquil river estuary below. Their Cornish heritage is evident through their traditional attire, adorned with classic cornish hats that shield them from the sun's rays. As they sit comfortably on a wooden bench, one can almost imagine the gentle breeze carrying whispers of conversation and laughter between these companions. The faint aroma of tobacco fills the air as one man leisurely enjoys his pipe, adding an extra layer of authenticity to this nostalgic scene. The calm waters reflect shades of blue and green under Truro's clear skies, creating a mesmerizing backdrop for this timeless snapshot. It serves as a reminder of how water has always been an essential mode of transport in Cornwall's history - connecting communities along its winding rivers and estuaries. Although captured by an unknown photographer, this remarkable print now finds its place within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection - preserving not only memories but also showcasing our rich cultural heritage. As we gaze upon this photograph today, it allows us to appreciate both our past and present connections with nature and transportation while immersing ourselves in Cornwall's enchanting beauty.
