EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the essence of a bygone era, this vintage print transports us to the Beach at low tide in Port Gaverne, St Endellion, Cornwall in 1906. The image reveals a bustling scene with boats gently resting on the sand, while a horse and cart traverse the shoreline. Two men can be seen diligently working with picks nearby, perhaps engaged in slate quarrying activities. Port Gaverne was once a thriving port known for its slate exports from the neighboring Delabole slate quarry. Additionally, it played a significant role as an active seining port, boasting four pilchard cellars capable of processing an impressive 1000 tons of fish per week. However, by 1900 tourism had emerged as the village's primary industry. Today, Port Gaverne continues to charm holidaymakers with its picturesque coastal beauty and rich history. Nestled within Cornish cove and surrounded by stunning sea views along the north coast, this fishing village has evolved into one of Cornwall's beloved communities. The photographer behind this snapshot is Herbert Hughes. Through his lens, he immortalized not only the physical landscape but also captured glimpses of livelihoods that shaped Port Gaverne's past. This remarkable print serves as a testament to both our fascination with history and our enduring love affair with coastal destinations.
