Fishing boats and fishermen on beach, Portloe, Veryan, Cornwall. July 1912

Two fishermen and three boats on the beach. A boat with the sail up is out at sea. The man on the left is identified as Richard Blamey Johns, known as " Deaf Dick" and the man on the right is probably his son, Richard Frederick Johns. Deaf Dick died in 1916 and his son was aged 68 in 1949, living at Vine Cottage, Portloe. He was father to Clare Richard who was still living in Portloe in 1984. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the essence of a bygone era, this vintage print takes us back to July 1912 in Portloe, Veryan, Cornwall. The scene depicts a picturesque beach adorned with fishing boats and hardworking fishermen. Three sturdy boats rest on the sandy shore while another sails gracefully out at sea, its sail proudly billowing in the wind. In this snapshot of history, we are introduced to two remarkable individuals. On the left stands Richard Blamey Johns, affectionately known as "Deaf Dick". A prominent figure within the community, Deaf Dick was an experienced fisherman who dedicated his life to the sea. Standing beside him is likely his son, Richard Frederick Johns. Tragically, Deaf Dick passed away in 1916; however, his legacy lived on through his son and future generations. In 1949, Richard Frederick Johns resided at Vine Cottage in Portloe at the age of 68. He continued to carry forward his family's seafaring traditions and was father to Clare Richard. This photograph not only showcases coastal beauty but also offers a glimpse into the lives of working men and their families during that time period. It serves as a testament to the strong sense of community that thrived within Cornish fishing villages like Portloe. Preserved by photographer Herbert Hughes' lens for over a century now housed within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection – this image invites us to reflect upon our rich maritime heritage while honoring those who shaped it.
