The Home Guard, formerly the Local Defence Volunteers, was formed in 1940 when there was a risk of invasion during the Second World War. Most men who were able to fight were already in the armed forces. The remaining men were either too young, too old, medically unfit or in reserved occupations (key jobs which were vital to the war effort). Joe Dyer is pictured in the back row, second from left.
