Lioness and cub
Lioness and cub. Female lion (Panthera leo) carrying one of her cubs in her mouth. A female lion in the wild usually gives birth to between two and four cubs. Since she only has four teats with which to feed her offspring, extra cubs are unlikely to survive. The cubs will remain with their mother for at least 18 months, during which time they will develop their hunting and social behaviours in readiness for independence. At the end of this period male cubs leave the pride. Females tend to remain in the pride into which they were born for most of their lifetime. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a tender moment between a lioness and her cub in the wild. The female lion, known for her nurturing instincts, delicately carries one of her cubs in her powerful jaws. It is fascinating to learn that a female lion typically gives birth to two to four cubs but can only feed them with her four teats, making it challenging for extra cubs to survive. For at least 18 months, these adorable cubs will remain under their mother's care as they develop essential hunting and social behaviors necessary for their independence. Interestingly, male cubs will eventually leave the pride while females tend to stay within the pride they were born into throughout most of their lifetime. The photograph was taken in the breathtaking Mala Mala Game Reserve located in South Africa. This stunning image showcases not only the beauty of these majestic creatures but also highlights their role as top predators in nature's delicate balance. As we admire this snapshot from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the intricate dynamics within wildlife communities and how crucial it is to protect and preserve these magnificent animals and their habitats.
