Old London Bridge, 1745

Old London Bridge. Artwork dated to 1745 of rowing and sailing boats in rough water next to Old London Bridge, across the Thames, in London, England. This bridge had 19 small arches, some obstructed by waterwheels. There could be a difference in height of two metres between the water levels on either side, and ferocious rapids were common. Many people drowned trying to navigate small boats through the arches. The bridge was also famous for the houses and shops that had been built on it since it was constructed in 1209. The houses were eventually cleared in the period 1758-1762, and the bridge itself was demolished after a new bridge nearby was opened in 1831. This artwork was by the British painter Samuel Scott (1702-1772)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1745, showcasing the iconic Old London Bridge in all its historical glory. Painted by renowned British artist Samuel Scott, this artwork vividly depicts rowing and sailing boats braving the treacherous waters surrounding the bridge. With its 19 small arches obstructed by waterwheels, navigating through them was a perilous task. The difference in water levels on either side could reach up to two meters, causing ferocious rapids that claimed many lives. What makes Old London Bridge even more fascinating is the fact that it housed numerous houses and shops since its construction in 1209. However, these structures were eventually cleared between 1758 and 1762. The bridge itself met a similar fate when it was demolished after a new bridge opened nearby in 1831. The monochrome illustration transports us to an era of danger and adventure as we witness brave sailors maneuvering their ships through this architectural marvel of medieval times. This image serves as a reminder of the hazards faced by those who dared to traverse these fast-flowing waters. As we gaze upon this piece of art, we are transported back in time to experience firsthand the rich history and culture embedded within Old London Bridge—a testament to both human ingenuity and bravery amidst hazardous conditions.
