Starch grains

Potato starch. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of starch grains (blue) in the cells of a potato, Solanum tuberosum. The stored starch grains are called amyloplasts. Starch is synthesised from sucrose, a sugar formed in the leaves during photosynthesis and transported to the tuber (potato) via the phloem (vascular tissue). It is used as a store of energy for the later development of buds on the surface of the potato. Starch grains found in potato cells are larger than those found in most plant cells. Magnification: x110 at 6x7cm size. x296 at 8x6ins, x157 at 10x7cm master size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of starch grains in a potato. The vibrant blue hue highlights the presence of these amyloplasts within the cells of Solanum tuberosum, commonly known as potatoes. As a vital storehouse for energy, starch is synthesized from sucrose, a sugar produced during photosynthesis in the leaves and transported to the tuber through vascular tissue called phloem. The larger size of starch grains found in potato cells distinguishes them from those present in most other plant cells. This magnified image at x110 reveals their fascinating structure and composition. It serves as a testament to the complexity and diversity found within botanical science. Beyond its scientific significance, this photograph also captivates with its artistic appeal. The meticulous scanning electron micrograph technique employed by Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate every minute detail of these starch grains. From their symmetrical patterns to their mesmerizing shades of blue, this image invites viewers into an enchanting microscopic world hidden within everyday vegetables. Whether you are fascinated by cellular biology or simply drawn to visually stunning imagery, this print offers both scientific insight and aesthetic pleasure. It reminds us that even seemingly ordinary objects like potatoes can hold extraordinary secrets waiting to be discovered under closer examination.
