EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to a bygone era, immersing us in the excitement and charm of early 20th-century travel. The Great Western Railway Excursion Handbill, dating back to 1909, serves as a fascinating relic that showcases how advertising was done during that time. The handbill itself is an exquisite piece of artistry, with its intricate design and delicate typography capturing our attention. It advertises an Easter Tuesday Excursion to London Paddington on April 13th, promising an unforgettable journey for all those who embark on it. However, what truly piques our interest is the mention of a football match at Park Royal between QPR and Reading. Intriguingly enough, this small detail reveals not only the significance of sporting events in society but also provides a glimpse into local history. We can imagine passionate fans eagerly planning their trips to witness this thrilling encounter between two rival teams. This handbill becomes more than just an advertisement; it becomes a window into the cultural fabric of its time. As we gaze upon this remarkable artifact from over a century ago, we are reminded of how much has changed since then while simultaneously appreciating how certain aspects have remained timeless. It serves as both a testament to human ingenuity in marketing and as a nostalgic reminder of simpler times when railway excursions were eagerly anticipated adventures filled with anticipation and wonder.
