EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR transports us back to March 1944, during the tumultuous years of the Second World War. In a time when women were breaking barriers and taking on roles traditionally assigned to men, this image showcases their invaluable contribution at the Road Motor Department in Slough, Berkshire. Amidst a backdrop of vintage cars and tools, we see a group of determined women donning overalls and confidently engaging in car maintenance and repair tasks. Their focused expressions reveal their dedication as they skillfully tackle what was once considered exclusively male work. During this era, with countless men serving on the frontlines or engaged in war-related industries, it became imperative for women to step up and fill these essential positions. The GWR Road Motor Depot recognized their potential and entrusted them with responsibilities that demanded technical expertise. This photograph serves as a powerful testament to both female empowerment during wartime and societal progress overall. It symbolizes how gender norms were challenged as women proved themselves capable not only on home fronts but also within previously male-dominated sectors such as automobile maintenance. As we reflect upon this remarkable moment frozen in time, let us honor these trailblazing women who fearlessly defied convention while contributing significantly towards victory in one of history's darkest chapters - World War II.
