Japan: Poster for an Exhibition of Export Articles'at Minatogawa, Kobe. Tsunetomi Kitano, 1911

Between the end of the First World War in 1918 and the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941, Japanese graphic design as represented in advertsing posters, magazine covers and book covers underwent a series of changes characterised by increasing Western influence, a growing middle class, industrialisation and militarisation, as well as (initially) left wing political ideals and (subsequently) right wing nationalism and the influence of European Fascist art forms

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to 1911 in Minatogawa, Kobe, Japan. The image showcases a poster for an exhibition of export articles, designed by the talented Tsunetomi Kitano. It serves as a window into the dynamic era between the end of World War I and the outbreak of the Pacific War. During this transformative period, Japanese graphic design experienced significant changes influenced by Western ideals, industrialization, and militarization. The rising middle class played a crucial role in shaping these developments. Initially driven by left-wing political ideals, Japanese graphic design later embraced right-wing nationalism and drew inspiration from European Fascist art forms. The poster itself reflects this evolving artistic landscape with its fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics and emerging Western influences. Its vibrant colors and bold typography catch the eye while conveying a sense of modernity that was sweeping through Japan at that time. Beyond being mere advertising tools or propaganda vehicles, posters like these became powerful reflections of societal shifts occurring within Japan's history. They not only promoted products but also conveyed cultural values and aspirations. As we gaze upon this historical artifact captured by Pictures From History/Universal Images Group (UIG), we are reminded of how art can transcend time to tell stories about nations' journeys towards progress and self-identity.
