EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting postcard print from the early 20th century depicts a nightmarish scene that is sure to leave viewers in shock and amazement. The image captures an elderly woman, her face contorted with pain and fear, as she holds onto her tongue while it is being cut off by a pair of gruesome-looking scissors. The level of detail in this antique print is astonishing, showcasing the skillful artistry of its creator. The postcard serves as a chilling reminder of the dark side of human history, where violence and cruelty were unfortunately all too common. It evokes a sense of unease and discomfort, forcing us to confront our own capacity for horror. While it may be difficult to comprehend why such an unsettling image would be created or circulated on a postcard, it speaks to the power that visual imagery has always held over people's emotions. This particular piece falls within the realm of commercial art and graphic design, highlighting how even disturbing subject matter could find its place within artistic expression during this period. Now housed at Lake County Museum, this color print reflects elements from various Western European styles including Dutch and Netherlandish influences. Despite its shocking content, this unique artifact offers valuable insights into historical periods when society grappled with darker aspects of humanity.
