The 1490s were a time of great exploration and political intrigue. It was during this decade that Christopher Columbus, the renowned Italian navigator and explorer, embarked on his historic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, forever changing the course of history. In England, Lady Catherine Gordon captivated King Henry VII with her beauty and charm before becoming his queen consort. Meanwhile, Lambert Simnel toiled away in the Royal Kitchens, unaware of the role he would soon play in a daring imposter plot. Across the English Channel, Perkin Warbeck sought refuge at Beaulieu Abbey in the enchanting New Forest. His claim to be Richard of York posed a threat to King Henry VII's reign and ignited tensions that would shape European politics for years to come. In Ensisheim (now France), an extraordinary event unfolded as a meteorite fell from the sky. This celestial phenomenon fascinated scientists and locals alike, leaving an indelible mark on history. Artistic masterpieces also emerged during this period. A captivating battle scene between archers and cavalry adorned with gold paint graced vellum canvases around 1495-1500. Another striking artwork depicted Romans attacking Augsburg using brown ink and pale colored washes on paper. The Massacre of the Innocents was vividly portrayed through paint and ink on gold ground vellum around 1490 - a haunting reminder of humanity's capacity for cruelty. Illustrated pages from Latin editions of Plutarchus Parallel Lives transported readers back in time as they witnessed Theseus valiantly battling a Centaur in woodcut form circa 1496. Similarly, an illustrated title page from De Agricultura captured agricultural knowledge through intricate woodcuts dating back to 1495. Woodcuts also brought life to scenes beyond mythology or farming; The King and his Courtiers Playing Chess showcased royal leisure activities while A Cook and his Wife provided glimpses into everyday life around 1496.
