The 1620s were a time of significant events and artistic masterpieces. Squanto, the Native American guide who played a vital role in the survival of the Pilgrims, is depicted leading the March of Miles Standish in an American lithograph. Meanwhile, in Cordoba, Argentina, construction began on Estancia Jesuitica Santa Catalina, showcasing architectural brilliance that still stands today. One notable escape during this decade was that of Grotius or Hugo de Groot. His story captivated many as he managed to flee imprisonment by hiding inside a book chest. Art also flourished during this period with Domenico Fetti's masterpiece "David with the Head of Goliath" capturing attention and admiration. Even Christmas cards had their beginnings in the 1620s when George Wither penned heartfelt poems to accompany festive greetings. The era was not without its supernatural charm either; hobgoblins made their appearance around 1610, adding an element of enchantment to folklore. Traveling eastward to India brings us to Agra's Itimad-ud-Daulah mausoleum interior known as Baby Taj. This stunning structure showcases intricate craftsmanship from 1628 and remains a testament to Mughal architecture. Artistic expression continued with Artemisia Gentileschi's powerful painting "Judith holding the Head of Holofernes, " depicting strength and bravery amidst adversity. Saint Sebastian also found himself immortalized on canvas multiple times throughout this decade; his image prepared for martyrdom captured hearts worldwide. Biblical tales came alive through art as well; Balaam and his talking ass became subjects for painters like Pieter Lastman in 1622. And let us not forget William Shakespeare himself. An engraving from his collection published posthumously in 1623 serves as a reminder of his enduring legacy.
