At Fowl House Farm in Witley, the picturesque countryside comes alive with the harmonious presence of an animal herder. With children frolicking nearby and a flock of sheep grazing peacefully, this scene captures the essence of rural life. In "The Lamb" from 1789, depicted through hand-coloured relief-etching and watercolour, we witness the tender connection between shepherd and lamb. The herder's gentle touch is mirrored in "A Shepherd Weeping on a Tomb Erected to a Gnat" from 1808, portrayed with oil on canvas. This poignant artwork showcases not only the shepherd's compassion but also his profound empathy for all creatures.
