The Cinque Ports, also known as the Five Ports, hold a rich history that is beautifully captured in these antique engravings and photographs. This Victorian engraving of the Cinque Ports map showcases the strategic coastal locations that made up this alliance in the 19th century. The Court of the Brotherhood and Guestling of the Cinque Ports is depicted in a black and white photo, capturing a solemn procession from the Church of St Clement in Hastings. One notable figure associated with the Cinque Ports was Lord Warden W H Smith, whose portrait can be seen in another monochromatic photograph. His official residence, Walmer Castle in Kent, stands proudly overlooking its domain as shown in yet another captivating image. Gervase Alard, Admiral of the Cinque Ports, is commemorated through an intricate engraving within Winchelsea's church. Sandown Castle in Kent is also immortalized through an engraving showcasing its grandeur. The installation ceremony for Lord Palmerston as Lord Warden receives special attention with two separate engravings capturing his arrival at Dover Castle and his induction into this prestigious position. Lastly, a black and white photograph captures petitioners during The First Session of the Court of Claims on July 17th - their faces filled with hope and anticipation.
