"E 85: A Glimpse into the Vendee Uprising of 1793" Step back in time to witness the tumultuous events of the Machecoul uprising, where Vendeennes valiantly fought against Republican soldiers. In a haunting painting by Jules Girardet, we see the deroute of Cholet Insurrection armed in Vendee, as they retreat towards the Loire. Amidst this chaos, one story stands out - that of young Darruder. At just 14 years old, he displayed patriotic heroism by taking up his father's weapon and avenging his death. His bravery symbolizes the unwavering spirit of those who fought for their beliefs during this turbulent period. The French Revolution left no shortage of heroes, and Joseph Bara was one such figure. This child warrior fought for the Republic in Vendee and met an untimely demise. Jean Joseph Weerts immortalized him in a poignant painting titled "Death of Joseph Bara, " capturing both tragedy and courage. Venturing beyond battlefields, La Vendee (85) reveals its picturesque beauty within France's Pays de la Loire region. Illustrated maps from M. Vuillemin's collection depict stunning landscapes alongside military depots and naval routes - a testament to both nature's splendor and strategic importance. Amongst these maps lies Francois-Athanase de Charette de la Contria, a prominent Vendeen leader whose portrait is captured amidst costumes, weapons, and furniture from that era. Similarly honored is Maurice Gigost d'Elbee - another General Vendeen whose image graces historical records with pride. But it wasn't just local forces battling on these lands; Mainz troops under General Kleber also clashed with Colonel Shevardin during the Battle of Torfou en-Vendée. These clashes shaped history while leaving behind tales etched into memory forever.
