The Siege of Sebastopol - Interior of the Redan - from a photograph by Robertson, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Siege of Sebastopol - Interior of the Redan - from a photograph by Robertson, 1856. Crimean War. The Redan is a portion of a line of natural mounds, which has its highest elevation in the Malakoff; and it is that portion which lies between two ravines (the Woronzoff-road ravine and the Karabelnaia ravine) that run from the Camp plateau down into the city. The fortifications connect these two ravines by a line of earthworks...The Redan is a stony mound, the last undulation citywards of the table-land on which the besiegers sat down. It overlooks the descent down into the harbour of Sebastopol. Approaching it...from the south side, it appeared a very gentle elevation; but...it was an elevation very difficult to reach. For many hundred yards...the earth was scarred with trenches fortified with gabions, with heavy guns couched between them, allowing us just room to pass between..'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled "The Siege of Sebastopol - Interior of the Redan," captures the raw and unyielding terrain of the Redan fortification during the Crimean War in 1856. The image, taken by the renowned Scottish photographer Robert Robertson, offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of the battlefield. The Redan, a portion of natural mounds, is a strategic location overlooking the harbor of Sebastopol. It connects two ravines and is the last undulation citywards on the table-land where the besiegers established their position. The fortifications here are a formidable sight, with a line of earthworks connecting the ravines and trenches fortified with gabions and heavy guns. Approaching the Redan from the south side, the elevation may appear gentle, but it is, in fact, a challenging terrain to traverse. For hundreds of yards, the earth is scarred with trenches, making progress difficult and dangerous. The rugged landscape, dotted with the remnants of war, serves as a stark reminder of the intense and prolonged siege that took place here. This photograph is an essential historical record of the Crimean War, offering a glimpse into the challenging conditions faced by soldiers during the conflict. The image's haunting beauty underscores the immense bravery and resilience of those who fought in this pivotal moment in history.
