Throughout history, the Islamic State, also known as the Islamic Caliphate, has been a significant player in the political and cultural landscape of the Middle East. From the clash of the Seljuks with the Byzantines and Crusaders in the 1100s, as depicted in these vintage prints from Emery Walker Ltd, to the Abbasid Caliphate's rivalry with the Byzantine Empire in the 8th and 9th centuries, the region's complex history is marked by periods of peace and conflict. Fast forward to the present day, and the Islamic State continues to make headlines with its violent actions, as smoke rises from what activists claim is shelling from its fighters. Yet, amidst the chaos, the enduring beauty and rich heritage of Islamic art and culture persist, as evidenced by these ancient relics from the Abbasid Caliphate, including a jar from the 9th century and a page from a copy of the Quran.
