EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning folio, dating from the late 16th century, comes from a Tarikh-i Alfī manuscript, a historical work chronicling the reigns of the Abbasid caliphs. The recto side of the folio depicts the deaths of Al-Wathiq (r. 842-847) and Muhammad b. Baiis Jalis, while the verso shows the death of Anbakh. Al-Wathiq, also known as Abu Ja'far Harun ibn Muhammad, is shown on horseback, surrounded by his courtiers and soldiers, as he is struck down by an assassin. Muhammad b. Baiis Jalis, the vizier who orchestrated the assassination, is depicted riding a horse in the background. The scene on the verso shows Anbakh, a Persian general, being gored by a charging elephant during a battle. The folio is an opaque watercolor, gold, and ink on paper, and is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of the Abbasid Caliphate in the Indian subcontinent during the 16th century. The intricate details of the figures, animals, and landscapes are rendered with great skill and precision, and the use of gold adds an air of grandeur and importance to the scenes. The manuscript was likely produced in Lahore, in the Punjab region of modern-day Pakistan, during the Mughal period. This folio is an important historical and artistic artifact, providing a glimpse into the political intrigue and military campaigns of the Abbasid Caliphate in Hindustan (India) during the late medieval period. It is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and is a valuable addition to their South and Southeast Asian Art collection.
