Step back in time to the mid 19th century, a period filled with artistic marvels and historical milestones. The Iris Germanica, a stunning hand-coloured engraving from 1847, showcases the beauty of nature captured on paper. Meanwhile, Orlando, a Bay Racehorse in a Loosebox immortalized in oil on panel in 1845, portrays the grace and strength of these majestic creatures. The Viaduct across the Sankey Valley stands as an architectural masterpiece from 1831. Its colour aquatints and partly hand-coloured details transport us to an era where engineering marvels were celebrated. Bloomsbury, A Chestnut Racehorse with Sam Templeman up, takes us into the world of horse racing through its captivating oil on canvas depiction set against a picturesque landscape. Art lovers are treated to The Wrestling Scene in As You Like It painted by an unknown artist in 1854. This oil on canvas piece captures the intensity and drama of Shakespearean theater. Paolo and Francesca da Rimini transports us further into history with its emotional portrayal of doomed love rendered beautifully on canvas in 1863. In this era marked by significant political events, we encounter Abraham Lincoln's signed carte-de-visite from 1864. This vignette photograph framed with gold-ruled borders serves as a reminder of his influential role during this tumultuous time.
