"Capturing Lives: A Glimpse into the Past through Nitrate Negatives" Step back in time to 1939, where Mrs. Cleaver courageously raises her five sons on a new farm in Malheur County, Oregon. Through the lens of Dorothea Lange's camera, we witness their resilience and determination as they navigate the challenges of rural life. Meanwhile, George Cleaver embarks on an ambitious journey to develop 177 acres of raw land in the same county. In this snapshot frozen in time by Lange's artistry, we see his unwavering spirit and dedication to transforming the untamed wilderness into something fruitful. Traveling across states, our visual journey takes us to Person County, North Carolina. Here, a rail fence stands tall against a backdrop of poor barbed wire fencing – a poignant reminder of both division and perseverance amidst adversity. Venturing further south to Florida in 1936, Walker Evans captures a roadside sign that hints at stories untold. What messages did it convey? What dreams or struggles lay hidden behind its weathered facade? In Mississippi during the same era, Evans immortalizes Victorian gravestones and Civil War monuments with his lens. These silent witnesses speak volumes about history's weight upon society and remind us of those who came before us. Returning once again to Dorothea Lange's work from 1939 is an enigmatic image labeled "Hop pickers camp?" This mysterious glimpse into migrant labor sheds light on lives lived transiently but filled with hope for better opportunities. The unknown photographer transports us back even further within their collection dated between 1935-1942. We catch glimpses of rural smallholdings teeming with hard work and self-sufficiency; women finding freedom behind car wheels; African American families proudly claiming space on their porch; and tobacco leaves becoming symbols of livelihoods intertwined with nature’s bounty. These nitrate negatives, fragile yet resilient, offer us a window into the past.
