"Papier: Unveiling the Ancient Craft of Paper Making" Step back in time to Ancient Rome, where the art of selling and manufacturing books first emerged. In a vibrant coloured engraving from 1866, we catch a glimpse of this historical process that laid the foundation for our modern paper industry. Fast forward to the late 19th century, as depicted in engravings from France's "Grands hommes et grands faits de l'industrie. " Here, we witness the intricate process of handmade paper making. From tubs filled with rags used to create cotton paper to women meticulously packing each delicate sheet, these images capture the dedication and skill required in this age-old craft. The year is now 2022, and we celebrate Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), an influential artist who left her mark on history. Perhaps she too utilized papier as a canvas for her artistic expressions. Not limited to its practical uses, it also found itself intertwined with literature and storytelling. The lithograph advertisement for JOB Cigarette Paper takes us back to Paris in 1889 when it was showcased hors competition. A testament to how even simple objects like cigarette papers can become works of art. Intriguingly titled "The Vultures and the Pigeons, " an enchanting engraving from La Fontaine's fables transports us into a world where animals come alive through words printed on papier. Moving beyond Europe's borders, we find ourselves witnessing a conference held between French ship crew members aboard Pioneer and Portuguese traders in Agagogo, Gabon. On a floor covered with wrapping paper lie numerous bottles of wine—a stark reminder that even amidst serious discussions about slavery trade perils lingered beneath seemingly mundane surfaces. Traveling further eastward brings us to Shanghai region's village workshop during Doctor Piassetzky's voyage en Chine in 1874-1875. Y.
