"The Visigoths: Conquerors and Defenders of Ancient Rome" In the year 410, a pivotal event unfolded in the history of Ancient Rome. The mighty city was sacked by the Visigoths, leaving an indelible mark on both civilizations. This dramatic moment has been immortalized in art, such as Joseph-Noel Sylvestre's painting "The Sack of Rome by Visigoths" from 1890. However, it is important to note that They were not mere plunderers; they also played a significant role in defending Rome against external threats. One such instance was their alliance with the Romans at Chalons, where together they defeated the formidable Huns. At the forefront of this tumultuous period stood Alaric I, a prominent figure among the Visigothic leaders. His name became synonymous with power and conquest as he led his people through numerous battles and campaigns across Europe. Evidence of their presence can still be found today – like Witiza's tombstone at Basilica of Saints Justo and Pastor in Barce or Roman bridges over River Rhine in Germany – reminding us of their lasting impact on European history. Alaric II continued his predecessor's legacy as King of Spain during this turbulent era. Under his rule, Spain witnessed both prosperity and conflict as he navigated alliances and rivalries within his kingdom. Visiting Athens was not beyond Alaric's reach either; an engraving from 1894 depicts him standing amidst ancient Greek ruins - a testament to how far-reaching their influence truly was. Another significant moment occurred when Wamba triumphantly entered Toledo as its king - symbolizing unity under Visigothic rule. These events showcased their ability to establish themselves firmly within conquered territories while preserving their own distinct culture. Engravings from Museo Militar dating back to 1883 depict noble Visigoth warriors adorned with armor and weapons, exemplifying their military prowess and the strength of their civilization.
