Step back in time to the XIIth century, a period filled with historical events and architectural wonders. One notable figure of this era was St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, depicted in a captivating coloured engraving. His influence on the church and society left an indelible mark on history. Drum Castle stands as a testament to the strength and grandeur of medieval architecture. In a striking black and white photo, its imposing presence evokes images of knights and noble lords. The Byzantine Emperor Leon VI "The Wise" led military campaigns against the Bulgarians in 894. A miniature from "Synopsis historiarum, " an illuminated manuscript dating back to the 12th century, captures these epic battles with intricate detail. Richard the Lionheart emerges from history's pages in all his glory through a vibrant lithograph. Known for his bravery and chivalry, he remains one of England's most iconic kings. As we journey further into this enchanting century, we come across Traquair House's Bear Gates flanked by majestic gate lodges. The monochrome photograph transports us to an era where castles were fortified strongholds protecting their inhabitants. Berkeley Castle reveals itself through various perspectives captured by black and white photographs. Its inner bailey showcases both its defensive capabilities and architectural beauty found within country houses dotting the Cotswolds landscape. A footed bowl crafted during late XIIth or early XIIIth century fascinates with its delicate fritware material adorned with pierced patterns and underglaze painting. It serves as a reminder that artistry thrived even amidst tumultuous times. Berengaria's alarm for her husband Richard Coeur de Lion is vividly portrayed in an oil painting from 1850. This emotional depiction encapsulates the fears faced by loved ones during wartime struggles.
