Abbots of the Ngor Monastery, late 16th century. Creator: Unknown

Abbots of the Ngor Monastery, late 16th century. The first two abbots of the Ngor Monastery in central Tibet, the older Sempa Chenpo and the younger Jamyang Sherab Gyatsho, engage in a lively conversation. They may be discussing the teachings of the "Hevajra Tantra": the wrathful deity Hevajra, united with his female partner, occupies the space between their flowered halos. Above Hevajra is the Buddha Vajradhara, the ultimate source of the tantra's teachings, surrounded by members of the teaching lineage. The fifth figure on the left wears a red hat identical to that of the younger abbot at the centre. He is Sakya Pandita, a prominent lama of the Sakya monastic tradition. When Ngor Monastery was founded in 1429, it became the center for a new branch of the Sakya lineage

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 16th century print, two revered abbots of the Ngor Monastery in central Tibet, Sempa Chenpo and Jamyang Sherab Gyatsho, are deeply engrossed in a lively conversation. The serene setting is adorned with vibrant colors, as the abbots sit cross-legged on a richly decorated platform. The older abbot, Sempa Chenpo, wears a green robe and a red hat, while the younger Jamyang Sherab Gyatsho dons a similar green robe and a red hat, identical to that of the figure on the left, who is identified as the renowned Sakya Pandita, a prominent lama of the Sakya monastic tradition. Above the heads of the abbots, the wrathful deity Hevajra, united with his female partner, occupies the space between their flowered halos. Hevajra represents the ultimate source of the Hevajra Tantra's teachings, and is surrounded by members of the teaching lineage. The fifth figure on the left, with a red hat, is identified as Sakya Pandita. Ngor Monastery, founded in 1429, became the center for a new branch of the Sakya lineage. This exquisite painting, executed in tempera on cloth, is a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of Tibet. The abbots' intense focus and the intricate details of their attire and surroundings reveal the depth of their education and devotion. The peaceful atmosphere of the scene invites reflection and contemplation, making this an invaluable addition to any collection of Asian art or Buddhist art.
