EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, showcases Ichikawa Danjuro V in the role of Kakogawa Honzo from the play "Kanadehon Chushingura" (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), performed at the Nakamura Theater in the ninth month of 1780 in Japan. Danjuro V, a prominent Kabuki actor of the Edo period, is depicted wearing the traditional attire of a samurai councillor. His intricately designed costume includes a formal robe, a wide-sleeved jacket, and a pair of high-heeled carriage boots, known as hosoban geta. The print also features Danjuro V holding a fan in one hand and a handheld fan in the other, adding an element of elegance to his portrayal of Honzo. The black color woodblock print, a testament to the artistic school of the time, showcases the attention to detail and the masterful use of color that characterizes Shunsho's work. The print offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of Japanese art and the world of Kabuki theater during the eighteenth century.
