Miyakawa Shunsho, a renowned artist in the 18th century, captured the essence of Japanese theater through his exquisite woodblock prints. His works showcased various actors portraying iconic roles with incredible detail and skill. In one print, we see Yamashita Kinsaku II transformed into a Thunder Goddess, emanating power and grace on stage during the play Onna Narukami. Another print features Matsumoto Koshiro III as Matsuo-maru in Ayatsuri Kabuki Ogi, captivating audiences with his mesmerizing performance. Shunsho's talent extended beyond kabuki theater as well. He depicted Otani Hiroji III possibly playing Akaneya Hanshichi in Fuji no Yuki Kaikei Soga, showcasing his versatility as an actor. Ichikawa Danjuro V took center stage in another masterpiece by Shunsho, embodying Watanabe Kiou Takiguchi in Nue no Mori Ichiyo. Not only did Shunsho capture individual performances but also group dynamics within plays like Gonin Otoko where Nakamura Sukegoro II portrayed Kaminari Shokuro multiple times with different expressions and emotions. Sawamura Sojuro II's portrayal of an outlaw exuded intensity and rebellion while Otani Hiroji III and Sakata Sajuro I shared the stage as Kameo and Ario respectively. In later years, Nakayama Kojuro VI embodied Osada Taro Kagemune with elegance and poise while Ichikawa Danjuro V continued to captivate audiences with his magnetic presence. Shunsho's artistry wasn't limited to male actors alone; he also beautifully portrayed female performers such as Ichikawa Somegoro from "A Picture Book of Stage Fans" alongside Nakajima Kanzaemon III and Iwai Hanshiro IV.
