EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, showcases Ichikawa Danjuro V in his role as Kazusa no Gorobei Tadamitsu in the Kabuki play "Kitekaeru" (The Cuckoo's Crest). Performed at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1780, this artwork is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of Edo period Japan. Danjuro V, a leading figure in the Katsukawa School, is depicted in intricate detail, wearing the elaborate and colorful costume of his character. The geometric patterns and vibrant hues of his clothing, including the distinctive hosoban (thin stripe) design, are beautifully rendered in the meticulous block printing technique. His hat, boots, and geta (traditional Japanese sandals) complete the authentic portrayal of a Kabuki actor of the time. The actor's expressive face, adorned with traditional makeup, conveys the intensity and emotion of the character he portrays. The print also features a carriage boot, adding to the theatrical setting of the scene. This artwork is not only a stunning representation of the artistic school of the time but also a valuable piece of cultural heritage, showcasing the fashion, entertainment, and artistic sensibilities of 18th century Japan.
