EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, depicts Ichikawa Yaozo II in the role of Ashikaga Motouji disguised as Katagiri Yashichi in the Japanese play "Oyoroi Ebido Shinozuka." Performed at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1772, this theatrical masterpiece was a significant event during the Edo period in eighteenth-century Japan. Ichikawa Yaozo II, a prominent actor of the Katsukawa School, is shown here in an intricate disguise, holding a basket filled with colorful fishes. Motouji, the Ashikaga shogun, had disguised himself as Yashichi, a humble fisherman, to investigate a reported crime. The artist masterfully captures the essence of the disguise, with Yaozo II portraying Motouji barefoot and dressed in a simple hosoban kimono, contrasting sharply with his regal attire as the shogun. The print, with its rich green color palette, showcases the artistic prowess of the Katsukawa School, which was known for its innovative techniques and detailed representations of human emotion. The artist, Shunsho, expertly employs the use of bold lines and intricate patterns, bringing the scene to life and immersing the viewer in the world of Japanese theater. This work of art is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan and the importance of theater in the daily lives of its people during the Edo period. The print's intricate details and vibrant colors make it a must-see for anyone interested in Asian art, theater history, or the fashion and clothing of the eighteenth century.
