EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, titled "The Actor Nakamura Noshio I as the Spirit of the Courtesan Takao, in the Shosagoto Dance Sequence 'Sono Utsushi-e Matsu ni Kaede' (A Shadow-Picture of Pine and Maple), the Last Scene of Part Two of the Play Keisei Momiji no Uchikake (Courtesan in an Over-Kimono of Maple Leaf Pattern)" by the renowned artist Shunsho, dates back to the 18th century in Japan. The print showcases Nakamura Noshio I, a prominent Kabuki actor of the Katsukawa School, in the role of the Spirit of the Courtesan Takao. In this scene from the Morita Theater, Noshio dons a stunning hosoban kimono, adorned with intricate maple leaf patterns, and assumes the guise of a female courtesan in the final act of the play. The candleholder and candlestick in the foreground add an element of drama and illumination to the scene, while the cream-colored background accentuates the vibrant hues of the actor's costume. This print is a testament to the artistic school of Katsukawa and the rich cultural heritage of Kabuki theater in Japan during the Edo period. The elegance and sophistication of the courtesan's attire, combined with the dramatic lighting and expressive facial features of the actor, make this a truly mesmerizing work of art.
