EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, depicts Segawa Kikunojo II in the role of Yuki Onna, or the Snow Woman, during a dance interlude in scene two of the Joruri play "Cotton Wadding of Izu Protecting the Matrimonial Chrysanthemums" (Myoto-giku Izu no Kisewata), performed at the Ichimura Theater in Japan during the first day of the eleventh month, around 1770. The Edo Period (1603-1868) print is a center sheet of a hosoban triptych, which showcases the artist's mastery of color woodblock printing. Kikunojo II, a male actor, is dressed in traditional female attire, portraying the legendary Snow Woman from Japanese folklore. The Snow Woman is a beautiful and enchanting figure who appears during the winter season to protect the chrysanthemums from frost. In this scene, she is shown gracefully dancing, her face adorned with a thick layer of white makeup, symbolizing the snow. The print is characterized by its vibrant green color, which is contrasted by the white of Kikunojo II's makeup and the black outlines of his elaborate kimono. The actor's expressive face and fluid movements are captured perfectly in this artistic representation, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the eighteenth century. The print also features intricate details, such as the elaborate gate and entrance of the Ichimura Theater, which adds to the overall atmosphere of the scene. This print is a testament to the artistic school of Katsukawa, which was known for its innovative use of color and its ability to capture the essence of traditional Japanese drama.
