EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, showcases Segawa Kikunojo III in the role of Hito-maru, disguised as the courtesan Chiyozaki, in the play "Kuruwa no Hana Katsuragi no Kane," performed at the Ichimura Theater in the third month of 1775. The Edo Period (1603-1868) in Japan was a time of rich artistic expression, and the world of Kabuki theater was no exception. Kikunojo III, an accomplished actor of the Katsukawa School, mastered the art of onnagata – male actors who portrayed female roles. In this print, Kikunojo III dons the elegant and intricately designed kimono and accessories of Chiyozaki, a character from the play. The vibrant colors and detailed patterns of the clothing are brought to life through the art of color woodblock printing. The courtesan's outfit is adorned with a hosoban – a long, narrow kimono worn by unmarried women – and a kimono jacket, both featuring delicate floral designs. The obi – a sash worn around the waist – is tied in a complex bow, adding to the authenticity of the costume. The actor's skillful portrayal of Chiyozaki is further emphasized by the serene expression on his face and the graceful pose he assumes. The background of the print showcases a tranquil garden scene, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the artwork. This print is a testament to the artistic talent and theatrical traditions of Japan during the 18th century, providing a glimpse into the world of Kabuki and its captivating performances.
