"This woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) showcases two of the most celebrated kabuki actors of the Edo period, Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Goshaku Somegoro and Onoe Kikugoro III as Denkichi Tsuchizaemon. The print, estimated to have been created around 1844 or 1848, is a stunning example of the intricacy and artistry of color woodblock printing during this period. Goshaku Somegoro, portrayed by Ichimura Uzaemon XII, is depicted in a heroic pose, his left leg bent and his right leg extended, holding a long katana blade in a balanced stance. His dramatic costume, consisting of a richly patterned kimono and a flowing hakama, is a testament to the theatricality and grandeur of the kabuki tradition. In the inset, Onoe Kikugoro III, portrayed as Denkichi Tsuchizaemon, is shown in a more subdued, contemplative pose.
