EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho in 1781, depicts the actors Matsumoto Koshiro IV and Segawa Kikunojo III in the roles of Choemon and Ohan, respectively, from the Kabuki play "Kabuki no Hana Bandai Soga" (Flower of Kabuki: The Eternal Soga). The scene portrayed is the elopement interlude, "Michiyuki Segawa no Adanami" (An Elopement: Treacherous Waves in the Shallow River), performed at the Ichimura Theater on the twenty-fifth day of the fourth month that year. Choemon, dressed in a striking brown kimono with black accents, is shown in a passionate embrace with Ohan, portrayed by Segawa Kikunojo III, who is dressed in traditional female attire as part of the theatrical tradition of female impersonation in Kabuki. The actors' expressive faces and dynamic poses convey the intensity and excitement of their elopement, while the intricate details of their elaborate costumes and the vibrant colors of the print showcase the artistic skill and creativity of the Katsukawa School, particularly of its master, Shunsho. The print offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Edo period, showcasing the beauty and elegance of Kabuki theater and its artistic traditions. The use of color woodblock printing, a popular artistic medium during this time, adds to the visual appeal and preserves the image for future generations to appreciate.
