The Apocalypse: The Angel Sounding the Sixth Trumpet, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French
The Apocalypse: The Angel Sounding the Sixth Trumpet, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Apocalypse: The Angel Sounding the Sixth Trumpet" an extraordinary work of art created by Jean Duvet between 1546 and 1556. Part of a bound volume illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible, this print is a testament to Duvet's immense talent and creativity. Consisting of 23 engravings, this series was a laborious project that spanned several years for the artist. It stands as his most significant artistic accomplishment and remains highly regarded to this day. Only seven complete sets are known to exist, making this particular volume held by the museum truly remarkable. Jean Duvet was not only one of France's earliest prominent printmakers but also one of the most innovative artists during the 16th century. Although primarily based in Langres, he drew inspiration from Italian art through circulated prints, particularly those by Marcantonio Raimondi. This influence is evident in his skillful portrayal of human figures with solid modeling reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance. However, what sets Duvet apart is his unique style characterized by crowded compositions that disregard rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. This idiosyncratic approach adds an intriguing dimension to his works and further enhances their visual impact. Through Heritage Art/Heritage Images' stunning reproduction, viewers can now appreciate every intricate detail and immerse themselves in Jean Duvet's imaginative interpretation of "The Apocalypse: The Angel Sounding the Sixth Trumpet.
