The Apocalypse: The Angel in the Sun Calling the Birds of Prey, 1546-1556. Creator
The Apocalypse: The Angel in the Sun Calling the Birds of Prey, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

The Apocalypse - The Angel in the Sun Calling the Birds of Prey, 1546-1556
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports viewers to a world of divine revelation and impending doom. Created by Jean Duvet, one of France's pioneering printmakers during the 16th century, this artwork is part of a rare bound volume illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse as described in the Book of Revelation. Duvet's meticulous attention to detail and his mastery over engraving techniques shine through in this series comprising 23 engravings. This particular piece stands out as an exceptional achievement within his oeuvre. Only seven complete sets are known to exist today, making it an invaluable treasure for art enthusiasts and collectors alike. Influenced by Italian art, particularly Marcantonio Raimondi's prints, Duvet blends solidly modeled human figures with his own idiosyncratic style. His compositions defy rational space and instead embrace ornamental surface patterns that mesmerize viewers with their complexity. "The Apocalypse: The Angel in the Sun Calling the Birds of Prey" invites us into a world where celestial beings summon birds of prey amidst cosmic chaos. It serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's mortality and our eternal struggle between good and evil. This remarkable print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images not only showcases Duvet's artistic genius but also offers us a glimpse into an era when religious narratives held immense significance in both society and art.
