EDITORS COMMENTS
the George Owen Knapp house, located on Sycamore Canyon Road in Montecito, California, is a stunning example of Italianate mission style architecture captured in this photograph taken in 1917. The house was designed by Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead and built by Christopher Tornoe in 1911 for George Owen Knapp. The original structure was later expanded by E. Russell Ray in the same year. The estate's landscaping is equally impressive, with various elements designed by notable landscape architects of the time. The lower garden was designed by Francis Townsend Underhill in 1914, while the upper garden was the collaboration of Carlton Monroe Winslow and Charles Gibbs Adams around 1913. The estate's superintendent from 1912 to 1928 was Charles R. Waugh, and the head gardener was John Scott. The photograph showcases the house's beautiful shaded steps, leading up to the terrace, and the lush greenery surrounding it. The Italianate influence is evident in the arches and columns adorning the house, as well as the terracotta roof tiles and wrought iron detailing. The gardens, filled with various plants and trees, add to the estate's charm and serenity. This photograph is a testament to the beauty and elegance of Montecito's architectural and horticultural heritage during the 1910s. Frances Benjamin Johnston, the renowned American photographer, captured this image as part of her extensive collection of lantern slides from the 1920s and 1930s. Today, the George Owen Knapp house stands as a significant historical landmark, showcasing the rich architectural and horticultural history of Montecito, California.
