The house was originally designed by Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead and built by Christopher Tornoe in 1911 for George Owen Knapp. Later expansions were carried out by E. Russell Ray in 1911. The lower garden in the foreground of the image was designed by Francis Townsend Underhill in 1914, showcasing a vibrant array of flowers and plants.
