EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts a pivotal moment in the political turmoil of Constantinople in 1876, known as The Assassinations at the Sublime Porte. The image captures the aftermath of the shocking crime that unfolded in the Council-Chamber of the Ottoman government. In the room, several ministers and officials are seen in various stages of reaction, as chaos ensues following the assassination of Hussein Avni Pasha, the Minister of War. The assailant, identified as Hassan, a former army officer, stands in the foreground, brandishing a revolver and wearing a fez, having just killed not only Hussein Avni Pasha but also the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Raschid Pasha, and two attendants. Halil Sherif Pasha, the Minister of Justice, who is depicted in the background, was a prominent figure in Ottoman politics. He had previously served as Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador at Vienna, and Chief Secretary for Foreign Affairs under Midhat Pasha. Known for his European education and progressive views, Halil Sherif Pasha was considered one of the most capable men in Turkey after Midhat. The assassinations marked a turning point in the political instability that plagued the Ottoman Empire during this period, ultimately leading to the Hamidian Massacres and the eventual decline of the empire.
