"The Tarboosh: A Symbol of Tradition and Identity" The tarboosh, also known as the fez, has a rich history that spans continents and cultures. This iconic headgear holds great significance in various parts of the world, representing tradition, identity, and even political power. In 1902, Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, donned a tarboosh in his portrait by G Lekegian. As a British Field Marshal and diplomat, Kitchener's choice to wear this distinctive hat showcased his connection to the Ottoman Empire during his service in Egypt. Another prominent figure associated with the tarboosh is Charles George Gordon. In an image from 1924, this English soldier can be seen wearing the fez. His adoption of this headpiece reflects its popularity among Westerners who embraced Oriental fashion trends during that era. However, it was not only military figures who wore the tarboosh; ordinary people across different regions incorporated it into their daily lives. The Ottoman army soldiers depicted in Henri Meyer's artwork from 1895 proudly display their fezzes as part of their uniform. Traveling further eastward to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Maldive Islanders are shown wearing colorful turbans adorned with small tarboosh-like hats in an illustration dating back to 1875. Similarly, Moors cloth vendors are captured sporting these distinct headpieces while going about their business on bustling streets. Moving towards Africa brings us to Kimberly in South Africa where Mahomedanism thrived amongst Malay communities. An unknown artist captures a "Malay Masher" wearing a tarboosh-style hat around 1890—a testament to how far-reaching this cultural symbol had become. Even renowned artists like Henry Stacy Marks found inspiration in depicting individuals wearing the traditional Syrian costume complete with a tarboosh during the late nineteenth century—showcasing its allure and influence on artistic expression.
